The Women of Marvel – Part 1 – The Scarlet Witch

Hey Gang!

Fraz and I recently rearranged our offices and that means wall new space to fill! So I took the opportunity to create a 13 X 19 art print for my wall entitled “The Women of Marvel by Patrick Fillion”.

You all know how much I love my super heroines, and relished the opportunity to draw them for this project. I often miss drawing women, and jump on the opportunity to do so whenever it presents itself. The hair and shoes alone are always such a blast! LOL!!! Yup! It’s official – I’m truly Gay! HA! HA! HA!

I chose 6 of my all-time favorite Marvel beauties, drew them one by one, and eventually assembled them together to create the final print design.

Can you guess who the 6 heroines are?

Ironically, I drew Wanda Maximoff, the lovely (if somewhat troubled) Scarlet Witch last... but she turned out to be my favorite of the 6. So here she is for your viewing pleasure in her various stages – pencils, inks and colors.

I’ll share 1 heroine with you per post, and eventually we’ll get to the final montage! :o)

So make mine Marvel – and I hope you all enjoy this first look at my Women of Marvel!

Cheers – Patrick ;o)

Hey Patrick,

wow - the Scarlet Witch looks supremely sexy and self-confident! What a beautiful drawing, thanks for sharing this awesome piece.
You see, I was always an Avengers-fan; I always liked Tigra and her volatile and fierce being immensely. Sometimes I think her stripes and athletic build made me also fall in (geek-)love with Your creation Camili-Cat =D

Anysways, You and shemmy all the best and all the success in the world with this new project! Cannot await Your new ventures.

Hugs and kisses - Your forever-fan phroq

OH this looks like fun! Wanda was always my favorite Avenger. Although they always tend to make her mentally unstable, which really peeves me off. I'm still mad about the "no more mutants" thing, but I can't blame Wanda. I always wanted Capcom to take her and put her in one of their Marvel games. That'd be SOOO fun!

I like that you gave her the good costume, and I love the drawing of the cape. Hm-- okay-- other 5 Marvel ladies? Well, Storm, of course, because she's Patrick's fave. Elektra and Ms. Marvel because they're who Marvel's toting right now as their main gals. Spider-Woman (becasue of your banner--hee hee) and... hmm... I dunno. I can't think of anyone else. I'd like to see your rendition of Psylocke! haha-- I need to accept that I'm like her only fan!

Oh wait-- Invisible chick. That's #6.

I think Kitty Pryde would be a good addition to the list... always had a soft spot for her, ever since I read Power Pack #14 guest starring her and Nightcrawler.

Love the new blog and what a fantastic piece to start on! Always loved Scarlet Witch so its cool to see your take on her. She always seemed a bit underrated... Well until the decimation lol. Could it be a coincidence that she has a gay son and we all adore her??? (JC, or though she didn't make it into the capcom beat'em up titles>which was a major bummer< she did appear in x-men legends on the PS2, if you haven't already, you should get it:)

In anycase, I reckon that the other women are gonna be.. Possibly.. Erm.. Jean Grey, SpiderWoman (for the same reason JC) Storm, Sue Storm, Rogue and this one is so random, but I always thought she was incrediably cool, Dazzler? I think Mystique would be a better guess though. Maybe even Aurora coz it would be nice to see a fellow countrymen of yours in the line up;)

Hi Patrick

Let me start off by saying that I know absolutely nothing about super heroines. I do like strong female characters in movies and what not, but that's where it ends so my commenting on this post is rather limited but I will say that your illustration is brilliant. I can see you enjoy doing the hair just by looking at it, haha! Looking forward to seeing more of your female illustrations...such lovely curves.

LOTS of LOVE
Reikro

Ahhh... never heard of Scarlet Witch. Should I hang my head in shame? Very nicely drawn though.

And JC I love Psylocke!! Don't worry!!

*'You Are Not Alone' by Michael Jackson starts playing*

Love,
Wabbit xx

OOH actually Patrick, JC's mention of Invisible Girl/Woman has reminded me (and I hope you don't mind about this) that I included a bit of an analysis of Jeanne Darque (along with Invisible Girl) on an essay entitled 'Comic Book Heroines: What does their appearance say about our culture?' I even managed to justify slipping a full-frontal image of NJ in there haha. Can you believe I can get away writing about that for a fashion course! Excellent!

Hey Patrick & Shemmy!

This is where I hit a grey area, I don't know who The Scarlet Witch is.

In Australia we tend to be more DC orientated, I'm not sure why, maybe it's because we have a Warner Bros on the Gold Coast In Queensland, not really 100% about that.

Either way, as I have never seen the Scarlet Witch until now, I have to say she looks awesome as I don't have anything to comapre her with.

But have you noticed that the Women of Marvel's costumes all tend to be the one or two colors? As apposed to the Men who seem to have more colors in their costumes. But with DC Heroes, it's almost a reverse, almost all the male heroes are one or two colors but the women tend to really go for it.

This is also another dilema that I face living so far away from countries that create these amazing characters, being so far away in Australia, we don't tend to get the same hype that you do in Canada or America. Shame really!

Big Hugz!

Hi Gang...

I’m so excited to find you all here! I really appreciate your checking out Artistic License. I think we’ll have a lot of fun hereto! :o)

Phrog... Hey, my friend. Yup! I am a HUGE Avengers fan as well – actually, these days it’s more like I’m a bigger fan of the Avengers than of the current X-Men comics. I was a little sad at Wanda’s treatment in the pages of Avengers disassembled and House of M, but she remains one of my most adored characters in the Marvel Universe.

Tigra and Cam do share the same stripes, don’t they – or at least, very similar stripes. Those 2 would be so freaking HOT together! I’ll have to remember that! Maybe I’ll get the urge to draw Cam and Tigra going at it someday! LOL!!! Thanks for dropping by! XOXO

JC... How are you, buddy! It’s great to read from you here. Yup – Wanda was much maligned in the whole House of M stint, but I believe in here – she’ll be back! ;o) As for Capcom not including her in any games, yeah – that always bummed me out. But hey, she is included in X-Men Legends 2. She’s really fun to play, despite the bad voice actress they got to read her parts! Ah well – at least it’s something! LOL!

Meanwhile, you guessed at 2 of my six characters – as for the rest – I’m not telling ! You’ll just have to wait and see! HA! HA! HA! But I’m afraid Psylocke isn’t one of them – sorry dude! I like her just fine, but she has never ranked in my top 6. Still, maybe someday I’ll draw her for the fun of it! Thanks again for the comments! XOXO

Zan... so great to read from you here, dear friend! Kitty would have been fun to draw – especially in her Paul Smith “Sprite” costume from the mid 80s. I loved that look! She was so cute and innocent. Sadly, she isn’t one of the six – but what a great suggestion! Drop by anytime, my friend! XOXO

Thanks again you guys! Talk to you soon!

Hey boys! Thanks for the sweet comments!

PBenson... Hey my friend... thanks so much for stopping by! :oD Wanda rules, but you are right, she was always a little underrated! Well, she showed everyone what she can do in Avengers Disassembled and in House of M. And though she didn’t do anything really well, nice during that time, she was quite impressive and she finally showed how powerful she was! I really hope they bring her back and in a positive light someday. I would hate to think that she would be regarded as a “villain” from now on. Glad you enjoyed the pic I drew of her. And as for your guesses – all very good guesses, and certainly characters to consider drawing at some point – but I will let you discover if you guessed right as I post my 6 choices. Thanks again for stopping by! XOXO

Reikro... It’s always great to hear from you dear friend – even if you do not know who the Scarlet Witch is! LOL!!! I’m still very pleased you liked the illustration and appreciated her curves. That is one of the best parts of drawing women! Enjoy the Blog my friend! XOXO

White Wabbit... Don’t feel bad about not knowing who the Scarlet Witch is. She isn’t as mainstream as say Storm or Elektra... and besides, Reikro didn’t know her either – so you are in good company! ;o)

Meanwhile, I am quite curious about your essay and your inclusion of Jeanne Darque in it? I am assuming it was in a positive light? LOL!!! I’d love to read it at some point! And your inclusion of NJ is hilarious. Hope your fellow classmates and teacher weren’t too floored! HA! HA! HA! XOXO

Manny... Thanks for dropping by – and no worries about not knowing who the Scarlet Witch is – as you can see, a few other commentators didn’t know her as well. You are quite correct about Super Heroines and their 2-colored costumes. I realized that the hard way when I was coloring my six Women of Marvel: It made for a very uniform illustration in the end since most of the colors are quite similar. Still, that is tradition I suppose, and colors are always nice when they are complimentary. In any case, I am very happy you enjoyed the illustration. I may get to some DC characters at some point, time permitting. I’ve always been a HUGE fan of several Legion of Superheroes characters – especially the White Witch! Thanks again! XOXO

All the best, my friends!
Patrick XOXO
